What length will an MLB organization have to do to commit and implement something like this and get results to confirm? 5 years if the entire organization commits and implements through all it's minor league affiliates? Or is it best if a Driveline type organization sprouted up and implemented this to their pupils who they could follow through there development years to be sure they were sticking to the plan before turning professional?
I think starting it would be the simple part - almost no cost, just a buy-in from ownership down to the players. I think you would see some results first year, the players would largely like it, and did I mention no real cost?
The only path to Verlander not being the last mammoth is pretty obvious: the small number of humans who control the resources of 30 major league teams and their associated minor league systems have to decide to spend money using the tools you cite and incentivizing that different pathway. I'm not interested in using prediction markets, but I think that the most likely outcome of that choice is: some may, most won't. Most don't care enough about the individuals involved to change a system which has existed for a lot longer than it appears to have been in place. The question of incentives is one that should be addressed in the CBA, but won't be, so it has to be addressed in being better. Health *should* be an advantage and theoretically asymmetrical at first.
