Anyone else going a bit stir crazy?
With the lack of sports and the news looking more and more like the start of a bad zombie movie, I’ve been digging through ideas of things to do in this space. It’s a new newsletter, even if most of you know me and what I do.
One thing I’ve been pursuing over the last year or so is a book idea. I was approached to do something and while neither of my books sold well, it is nice to have books and to have that line on the resume.
This latest one — my second best current book idea — is pretty simple. “The Injured List: The Injuries That Broke Legends and Built The Modern Game of Baseball” It’s basically a listicle in book form — ten injuries that, well, you know.
So the question is — what are those ten injuries?
I have my ideas — #1 will surprise you — but I don’t want to publish them here just yet. I’m much more interested in what YOU think they are, so let’s make this interactive.
The rule I’m using is that the injury had to have made a significant change to the game itself. Curt Schilling’s bloody sock was notable, but it didn’t change anything about the game. Same with Bo Jackson’s hip … I think. I’ve sipped some whisky and debated the what ifs with myself and others for a while, but I can’t make the case.
I tried to find an early arm injury or figure out a way to make Steve Dalkowski fit in, but I have a list of ten and a list of ten more — sequel! — but again, using my rule of significant change to the game, give me yours. Doesn’t have to be all ten.
I’ll publish the best of them, plus my list, tomorrow. Until then, please stay safe.
