Scott Boras doesn’t lose.
Don’t pretend to think that I’m comparing Boras to anyone else here. I think very, very highly of Scott Boras. I’ve interviewed him, we’ve been on panels, and as a journalist, I’ve spoken to him on many occasions. I’m on record as saying that if I had a son with a chance to be drafted, my first call would be to the Boras Corporation.
But here, on election day eve, Scott Boras lost. Or appeared to. Gerrit Cole rescinded his opt-out, or something like that. I’ll be honest, I’m not clear how this actually worked. Cole had an opt-out that required the Yankees to add a year onto his contract at the same $36m AAV. He exercised it and less than 48 hours later, he doesn’t have the extra year and he’s still a Yankee.
I spoke to one NL GM who thought there was a chance Cole came free who said “I didn’t even think this [negotiating away the opt-out] was an option.” Of course, Ury’s Law is always in play: everything is negotiable.
