While I didn’t do football here at UTK in ‘21/’22, there’s been a lot of football behind the scenes. My old pal Tyler Brooke and I are putting together The Science of Football, which will come out in September, just ahead of the next NFL season.
It’s a bit tougher to explain, since The Science of Baseball isn’t out yet. (That’s scheduled for March 15th now, as I said in the last UTK.) The format is much the same, but obviously covers much different subjects. It’s not a textbook. It’s not a 101-level manual. It’s taking the games we love so much and breaking down the science behind what we see.
I’m excited to share things like how Patrick Mahomes trains to do the things that keep surprising us, how virtual reality is making football better and safer, and why players resist safety innovations. Tyler says “I can’t wait to share with readers how the perception of fourth down is changing across football, what the NFL can do to prevent injuries on kickoffs, and what teams and media outlets are doing to bring analytics into the game.”
There’s interviews with some big name insiders, innovators, and people changing the game. I guarantee that if you read this, it will change how you watch the game, because it did that for me in some surprising ways.
Again, you can pre-order The Science of Football now from Amazon or wherever you buy books. We’re putting the finishing touches on it and hopefully you can have a matched set before the end of the year. And no, the cover isn’t complete since the foreword isn’t locked up yet, though I think you’ll be excited.
Also, just after Baseball and Football, Will Haskett from PGA Tour Radio and The Perfect Number Podcast will be putting out The Science of Golf. Only Wills from Indy can put out sports science books, apparently!
